The landscape of explicit content has evolved alarmingly, with much of it depicting acts of aggression, coercion, and degrading content. The reasons why girls turn to porn can seem enigmatic.

When talking about the effects of porn with your teen, try to keep the conversation neutral and open. You want your child to see you as a source of support, not a source of judgment. Do you want sex to be connected, in the default wiring your mind, to a phone or computer screen? Because when you watch a lot of porn while your brain is in the process of creating that wiring, that’s what can happen. I wanted them to understand that porn is absolutely not a step-by-step tutorial of sex. And it’s not a guide to intimate communications with another person, including important discussions about consent with your partner, nor does it depict an accurate timeline of events when you’re having sex or engaging in intimacy. It is my hope for the future that women will be equally respected and not objectified. Of course if this were to ever happen, it would be many many years in the future. But it will never happen unless people are educated in the gender expectations and follow through with teaching boys and girls differently than previous generations. As adults, many men do learn to enjoy sex more with a partner they feel love towards.
